Writings From Voices 2003 - Hartford County - Oliver Wilson

Going back to school was not an easy task for me. I struggle with thoughts of who is going to look after my kids, where am I going to get the time to study, and can I really make it after not setting foot in a classroom for a long time. I put all these thoughts aside and finally took the big step and that's why I'm getting my high school diploma today.

It was not smooth sailing all the way, but with the encouragement of my friends, family, and teachers Laurie and Felicia, I made it. I am proud of myself because I really wanted to do this for a long time and this is the beginning towards achieving my ultimate goal of going to college.

Thanks to my teachers who were patient with me. Thanks to Steve and Tanna who were there to answer my questions. Thank you to my family, especially my sweet Dennyann, who sat beside me in class while I worked, and to anyone who helped me along the way, thank you.

Oliver Wilson works at St. Mary Home in West Hartford. She earned her high school diploma this year. Her daughter Dennyann often attended class with her.
