Writings From Voices 2003 - Fairfield County - Pauline Hines

I migrated from the Caribbean and it was unfortunate that I didn't get to finish high school back home. After migrating to the USA, I decided I must get my high school diploma. First, I attended night school from 7pm-9pm at a local school. After two semesters I dropped out because I was so tired all the time in class, and it was hard for me to learn.

I now work as a Certified Nursing Assistant, and it is a very hard job. I decided I have to make a change and the only way is to get my high school diploma. I started attending evening classes at Union Baptist Church given by 1199.

My teachers are very caring and understanding. They helped me a lot. Sometimes I would say "I can't do it" and they would say "Yes you can!" So I tried very hard and with the help of my teachers, I did succeed. Today I am a high school graduate, and now I'm looking forward to a new career.
