Where I worked as a CNA I had a patient by the name of Edward who often made me smile.
He always greeted me in the morning with "Babe, did you have a good night?" and as I wheeled him into the bathroom to get dressed we talked to each other. One day he said to me, "Clare, I have a lot of money and I am going to marry you and buy you a fur coat." I promised him I would take him dancing with me, which we thought was funny because he was blind. But even though he was blind, we always said things to each other to make us smile and make the day happier.
I have a lot of compassion for him. His birthday was on Tuesday. If he doesn't have his bath first he will not eat his breakfast. I know so much about him because of his blindness. I saw how other CNAs treated him, so what I did most of the time was exchange another patient for him and take him and help him get ready for breakfast. After he finished breakfast, I would take him back to his room and turn his radio
on and leave him there.
