Writings From Words From The Heart 1 - Erica Foster

Let me tell you about a patient that made me smile. Her name is Helen. She lives at the nursing home at Strawberry Hill. Every morning, about 6:00 o'clock, when she wakes up, she keeps on calling "Erica, Erica..."but my shift doesn't start until 7:00 o'clock. When I get there, the nurse lets me know that she is asking for me.

She likes to know if I'm going to give her her breakfast, give her a bath, and also dress her. Sometimes when I take out her outfit she says to me, "Honey, honey, I don't like this outfit", and I will say to her "Helen, you don't like anything." She will then say to me, "Honey, I like you." Every time she says that she makes me smile.

If she sees anyone with a cigarette, she says to me, "Honey, what's he doing with that cigarette in his hand? I never smoked in my whole life, and I will never, never smoke." I just smile. Sometimes she doesn't eat all her meal and will say, "Helen, eat some more." She will say, "Honey, my doctor says I'm too fat."

If the news says it is going to rain or snow, she will talk back to the TV saying "You old Channel 3, I don't like you, I'm going to turn you off. You're not making no sense, because you know I don't like rain or snow." And I just smile.

She can be very annoying sometimes, but she is very, very funny. She also makes a lot of patients laugh. I love her very much.
