Writings From Words From The Heart 1 - Marie Marcelle Aurelier

I didnt go back to school without a reason.. I am very happy to tell ~ you why I pushed myself to go back to school. I was outside striking for patient care and better staffing. One evening I heard Governor Rowland say on the TV that certified nursing assistants get $12.50 an hour, and that is enough for them, because they are non-educated people.

Since then, I have thought about going back to school and after a few days Dorothy came to me at Wintonbury to talk about registration for school. I went home and made up my mind to return to school, because that is the only way to plan for your future.

I learned a lot for the six weeks we were outside on strike. It was a good example for me and I am glad to be part of 1199. Members and I will never, ever, forget the memories of that strike in May 2001.

I cannot forget Almena and other members of the union staff who came out on the picket line with us. Since then I have seen the real America and I wake up knowing what state I am in. Governor Rowland tried very hard to work against the nursing home workers.
